Richard Haste, an NYPD officer, killed an unarmed black teen (Ramarley Graham) in front of his grandmother and 6-year-old brother at point blank range over marijuana. The landlady, Paulet Minzie, 55, ran out the shower with only a towel after hearing the gunshots. Officers then put a gun to her head and told her to put her hands up. It wasn’t until she told them that there were cameras surveilling them, that they put their guns down.
Court papers say “[He\] immediately lowered his weapon. His demeanor completely changed, and he alerted his colleague that they may be on camera,”. The footage later revealed that Graham walked calmly to his apartment followed by police barging in without a warrant, contradicting the officers original claim that the teenager was running away from him. Haste was freed on $50,000 bail yesterday after pleading not guilty. Police cheered for him as the parents of Graham wept in the court room.

Please stop pretending like a the race of Ramarley Graham, or any unarmed POC who is murdered by the NYPD and other police forces, is irrelevant. Maybe if the majority of people murdered by police weren’t POC, you would be able to get away with your ‘color blind’ rhetorics but that isn’t the case. If Ramarley was white, I’m sure the NYPD would not have pursued him over a dime of weed and kill him in front of his 6 year old brother and grandmother. And to prove my point, I challenge you to find a case in the last year where the NYPD killed an unarmed white male person. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

update from the donation page: Alex was charged with aggravated battery which is a felony. Their bond was set at $10,000, which means we have to post $1000 to get them out of jail. The earliest bond can be posted is 5pm. Some of us will be there to welcome them and to take them home. It takes several hours to process someone out, so it will most likely be after 8pm at the earliest that Alex will be out. The next hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday, Jan 8th. Alex is active in Palestine solidarity work through Punks Against Apartheid, has worked with youth in Chicago, and has supported past solidarity actions for prisoners.
All money raised will go directly to bailing Alex out and to any legal expenses incurred. We know that Cook County Jail is a horrific place to spend New Years, and we want to free Alex as quickly as possible. Thank you for your support!

An NLG lawyer will try to visit Alex this afternoon and also get more info on what the charges may be and the time and place for the bond hearing.
